Pianos are among the heaviest and most delicate items to move. An upright piano typically weighs between 150 kg and 350 kg, while a grand piano can exceed 700 kg. In addition to their weight, pianos are highly sensitive to temperature and humidity changes, making careful protection and professional handling essential.

You may be wondering whether you can move your piano yourself? The answer depends on several factors, including the type of piano, the floor level, the available access points, and above all, your experience in handling heavy objects. At Vaglio Déménagement, we always recommend hiring professionals for this type of heavy-item transportation.

Preparing and Securing the Piano

Assess the Available Space

Measure all access points carefully, including doors, staircases, and elevators, and plan a clear route before moving the instrument.Inform neighbours or building management if the piano must be moved through a stairwell or by using a furniture lift. In Luxembourg apartment buildings, particularly in the historic districts of Luxembourg City and Esch-sur-Alzette, this step is especially important.

Gather the Necessary Equipment

You will need at least four people of similar build, slings, non-slip gloves, back belts, thick blankets, a trolley or an electric stairlift, and a van fitted with a ramp or tailgate.

Protect the Instrument

Close the keyboard lid and secure the pedals with adhesive tape. Wrap the piano completely in moving blankets, paying special attention to the corners. For a grand piano, remove the music stand and legs and wrap them separately. Never use the piano’s built-in casters to roll the instrument.

Stabilise the Load

Place the piano on a suitable moving dolly : make sure it remains upright and stable throughout the relocation process. Secure the instrument with straps during transport. When moving up or down stairs, teamwork is essential. The piano must remain balanced at all times, and everyone involved should move in a coordinated rhythm.

Transportation and Installation

During transportation, avoid vibrations and impacts by driving slowly and carefully. Maintain a stable temperature inside the moving vehicle to minimise fluctuations in humidity levels. Upon arrival, unload the instrument carefully and place it against an interior wall, away from radiators and other heat sources.

One important detail that is often overlooked is that a piano should not be tuned immediately after a move. It is recommended to wait one to two weeks to allow the instrument to acclimatise to its new environment. This adaptation period is essential for preserving tuning stability and maintaining the instrument’s sound quality.

Entrusting the operation to professionals also provides insurance coverage in case of damage and access to specialised equipment, particularly when the piano must be moved through a window using a furniture lift.
